We are a community committed to Learning the Way of Jesus Together and part of this journey requires addressing areas of brokenness and pain. Though we wholeheartedly embrace and commend the regular practices of prayer, worship, scripture reading and participating in Christian community, there are times when some of us get stuck and need some professional assistance and for others of us, may have to embrace therapy as a long-term/permanent feature of our lives.
Though we don’t think therapy and medication is by any means a “silver bullet” solution, and we appreciate that there is some shame and stigma attached to mental health treatments, we do believe that when appropriate, professional counseling or therapy can be incredibly helpful in the life of a follower of Jesus.
We know many of you have been in or are currently in a counseling relationship and we are very encouraged by that. For some people, the idea may be intimidating, the options might be overwhelming and the financial commitment off-putting. For those reasons, we want to help remove some of the barriers.
Because we strongly believe that all who want it should be able to access it, we are making the following commitment to our church family:
If you are a regular member of Table Covenant Church and wish to try out professional counseling/therapy, we will cover up to one-half of your cost for the first session (whether out-of-pocket expense or your insurance co-pay). All you have to do is provide us with a receipt.
Because it can take time to find a counselor who is a good fit, we will cover this expense each time you find a new counselor.
Obviously everyone’s personal needs and insurance arrangements will be different, but we can make the following recommendations based on the experience of people in our community:
Psychology Today: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists (good starting point where you can narrow your search by your insurance provider and particular kind of counseling desired)
The Well Marriage Center: https://www.wellmarriagecenter.com (many locations around NoVA; wide spectrum of counselors available)
Regain: www.regain.us (you get matched with a counselor and then can decide what format to do the sessions in, whether text-based, video or phone)
So please do check out some of these options and should you decide to make an appointment, please do pass along the receipt to one of the pastors and we will get you reimbursed for half of that first session.
If this email has piqued your interest and you want to know more about counseling and mental health and how it relates to faith and church, please do not hesitate to contact either Pastor Mike (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Pastor David (email@example.com). Same goes for if you would like some assistance in navigating the search - we know, it can be very overwhelming!
